Puerto Rican Holiday
Today’s blog is not about fashion, models, beauty; it’s about a tradition in Puerto Rico that puts a smile on my face.
In the States, there is Santa Claus and in Puerto Rico although Santa comes to visit us too, we have another celebration called El Dia de Reyes or Three Kings Day. This day is filled with laughter and joy.
Our celebration begins on the eve of Three Kings Day. On the evening of January 5th, Puerto Rican children go outside with scissors and shoe boxes to cut grass for the camels to eat. The grass goes into shoe boxes and the boxes are placed under the beds of parents, grandparents, godparents, uncles, aunts, etc. Sometime during the night, the Three Kings come and while their camels eat the grass they fill the shoe boxes with gifts, sweets, and many wonderful things.
Growing up in the States I just knew about Santa, but when I moved back to the Island I got to know this wonderful tradition. So in Puerto Rico our holidays last longer, until the 6th of January. There’s nothing like a Puerto Rican Christmas…trust me I know!
Blessings to all,
Marta
